WinWind supports Abruzzo in developing sustainable wind energy

The region of Abruzzo in Italy aims to develop regional guidelines for the construction of wind farms, Italian WinWind partners provide technical support in the framework of this activity.

To kick off this collaboration, the region hosted a technical meeting with RSE (Stefano Maran, Elisabetta Garofalo) and ENEA (Tania Giuffrida, M. Cristina Tommasino). The technical support focuses on sharing instruments and methodologies aiming to identify suitable areas for wind farms, taking into account the presence of the wind resource and the spatial constraints (landscape, environment, and the urban areas). The Head of Energy Policy and Air Quality of Abruzzo, Iris Flacco, positively reflects on the opportunities arising from the WinWind activities.  In the upcoming revision of the Guidelines participatory methods aim to involve all relevant stakeholders from the planning stage up to the actual wind implementation.

In this context, the repowering of wind farms, which is already ongoing in the region, could represent a good example for the social acceptance, reducing the environmental and visual impact of the installations. The process of replacing older and less productive wind turbines allows reducing the number of wind plants installed in the same location and therefore far away from residential areas.
