WinWind at #EUSEW19

Full Summary Report of WinWind's activities at #EUSEW19.

From 17 to 19 June WinWind went to the heart of the EU in Brussels to engage with EU Institutions, and to discuss the Policy insights gained over the last months in the project’s target and model regions.

Within the frame of the EU Sustainable Energy Week, the project hosted an EU Policy Round Table on 17. June. Together with a row of experts from the European Commission’s DG ENER, the Committee of the Regions, RESCoop as well as WinWind’s advisory board and project regions, it was discussed how to strengthen social acceptance and community engagement in renewable energy. The discussion showed that “citizens at the centre” is more than just slogan. Innovative mechanisms from around Europe for raising social acceptance and criteria for fair wind energy were discussed together with implications of the EU Clean Energy Package.

On 19 June, WinWind co-organised a Session at the official Policy Conference of the EUSEW on “Speeding-up the energy transition by raising social acceptance”, which was led by ICLEI Europe. A keynote by the European Economic and Social Committee emphasized civic energy, the importance of ownership and to enable people to use their local renewable resources. Community-based approaches, strong political commitment, participatory planning, multi-stakeholder corporation, but also the availability of technical capacity were discussed as being fundamental ingredients for raising social acceptance. Local governments have key role to play for fostering social acceptance especially given the right regulatory framework.
